ART 200: First Blog Post

My name is Carli Walch. I was born in China in 2002. I was adopted when I was three years old. Ever since I've lived in Anchorage Alaska. I am a sophomore here at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am studying Elementary of Education. I will be graduating in 2026. I am enjoying my field so far and planning on continuing. My future goal is to teach 3rd or 5th grade. I love Alaska and also planning on teaching for ASD (Anchorage School District). Some of my hobbies include sports, working out, going on hikes and adventures, enjoy cooking and baking, and I like listening to music.

This is my art piece. Yes, many of you are thinking it's just a picture of a good-looking food bowl that I made. But to me, I think more of just that. I am not an artist. I never have been great with art. As I mentioned above that I love to cook, and I use my cooking still to become an art. I enjoy cooking new things and trying new things. One of my favorite dishes to cook is a protein bowl. It's pretty simple but it can taste pretty good. A protein bowl includes some sort of protein (meat/beans), vegetables, and rice. Beyond that, you can include anything else that may sound good to you in your bowl. I like to put a lot of things in my bowl because I like to eat anything. With this piece of the dish, I like to make it look presentable. I don't just pile everything on top of my rice. I like to put each topping into different areas in my bowl. When it looks nice and pretty, I get excited to eat it and it makes the food taste even better. That is my art piece. I think art includes something that looks creative and fun. For me cooking is fun and I can be creative when I cook and make it look like a piece of artwork that people would want to eat.

  2. Hi Carli! I love that you are able to take your love for cooking and use it as a way to create art! I enjoyed reading through your explanation of how you go about assembling your dishes and how that impacts your feelings toward the foods you are eating. In a similar way, I take my passion for baking and use that to create edible art. I really liked the image you attached of the food imitating a painting! I can’t wait to see your other creations and blog posts this semester!

  3. I've always seen food presentation as artistic as well! I also really like to cook and try new dishes, and that picture looks both scrumptious and visually appealing!

  4. Hello Carli, great work on your first post and it was very nice to learn about you. I think food is art as well. Dishes with a wide variety of colors that are pleasantly dished are very artistic. I'm excited to see more of your work this semester!
